Freescale Semiconductor Inc. addresses the need for highly integrated, high-performance MCUs for the industrial and automotive markets with the addition of a new member to its S08D family that offers 8bit performance and on-chip functionality.

Freescale's highly integrated 9S08DZ128 MCU CAN interface, EEPROM and on-chip emulation/debug tools. Each of the integrated capabilities is available across the full automotive temperature range of -40C to 125C.

In the automotive market, the 9S08DZ128 MCU targets body, chassis, safety and powertrain control. Prime industrial control applications include factory and building automation, security systems, health-care equipment, and aircraft and aerospace electronics.

Manufactured on Freescale's 0.25?m process technology and scaling up to 40MHz, the 9S08DZ128 is designed to deliver high performance within a low power envelope. By keeping power consumption low, the 9S08DZ128 MCU allows automotive design engineers to continue increasing vehicle electronics content within existing 12V battery capacities, claims Freescale. This low-power functionality, says Freescale, makes the device ideal for power-sensitive automotive applications, such as sunroof and seat control, steering and chassis systems.
