Now that the next-generation DVD format battle has ended in favor of Blu-ray, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd is expecting a surge in the global demand for Blu-ray movie disc players in the next five years.

This is according to the Associated Press, which quoted Jun Dong-soo, Samsung's digital audio-video business chief, as saying that he expects at least an 80 percent annual growth in the global market through 2012, with worldwide annual sales reaching 51 million players by that time.

The Samsung executive also predicted that 5 million Blu-ray products will be sold this year, a threefold growth over last year. Samsung's own Blu-ray product sales should grow to $402 million this year, Jun said, and shall surpass $1 billion by 2010.

Samsung early this week released a fourth-generation Blu-ray player and a second-generation Blu-ray home theater, the latest products in its Blu-ray porfolio.

Samsung was the first company to roll out a Blu-ray disc player in 2006. It also produced dual-format HD DVD and Blu-ray players, though it has ceased production of these in March when Toshiba Corp. announced it was withdrawing the HD DVD format from the market.
