It seems that coupon clipping is soon to become a thing of the past in South Korea as the hip, tech-savvy population of the country is turning to mobile phones instead, reported Reuters.

Retailers are now able to send discount coupons and gift certificates via cellphones, making such service one of the fastest-growing mobile phone applications in the country.

A barcode is embedded in the cellphone message. Users just have to show the coupon on the screen and retailers will scan the barcode to apply the discount.

According to the Reuters report, SK Telecom rolled out a service about a year ago called "gifticon" that enables users to send gift vouchers for items. The sender is then billed for the cost of the goods.

This service actually commenced six years ago, but failed to garner user attention as most saw the messages as spam and deleted them. According to industry experts, it was the young mobile phone users of South Korea, who often access the Internet through their mobile, that embraced the coupon service.
