Two solar-cell suppliersHelioVolt and SunPowerhave separately claimed world records in the arena.

SunPower Corp. claims that it has produced a full-scale, 5-inch prototype solar cell with an efficiency of 23.4 percent. This solar cell is based on its next-generation Gen 3 technology.

This is a world record for a large-area solar cell. Previously, SunPower, a subsidiary of Cypress Semiconductor Corp., achieved 22-percent efficiency with its solar cells, based on its Gen 2 technology.

"This record efficiency solar cell, which is expected to be commercially available in two years' time, extends SunPower's leadership position as a key component in our plan to reduce system cost by half by year 2012," said Tom Werner, CEO, SunPower.

Meanwhile, HelioVolt Corp. claims that it has produced thin-film solar cells with 12.2-percent conversion efficiencies set in a 6min record. The efficiencies placed HelioVolt's copper indium gallium selenide devices among the highest performing solar thin-film products in the market.

"The challenge is transferring the efficiency to a high-throughput, high-yield, low-cost process capable of delivering gigawatts worth of quality commercial products," said B.J. Stanbery, CEO and founder, HelioVolt.
