AMOLED display brings moving images to passports

In order to enable passport usage, the requirements are higher than for standard displays, so the companies had to resolve several problems attributed to this demanding application. For instance, the display materials have to be heat resistant since the passport needs to be protected against manipulation by means of laminating all pages including the display. The display has to be very thin and at the same time highly flexible.
The display is only 300?m thin. Including the protecting layer, the passport page that contains the display still is not thicker than 700 microns, the companies said. Implemented as an active matrix color display, each pixel is driven by an electronic circuit embedded in the thin material.
The passport does not contain any power sources. Instead, the display is activated via the power provided by a contactless reader. According to Bundesdruckerei, it will be possible to retrieve and display all kinds of information stored on the passport, for instance a moving passport image of the document holder as well as text-based information typically contained in a passport. This includes personal data of the holder such as name and address but also data regarding border crossings nowadays documented by stamps. Access to the passport contents and the access rights to alter the data have to be highly protected by means of cryptographic technologies, Bundesdruckerei said.
The passport is the first result of a technology cooperation between Samsung and Bundesdruckerei. The partners announced they will intensify their collaboration.
Security technology provider Bundesdruckerei GmbH is the former national German bank note and passport print shop, which has been privatized in 2000.
