The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) group has cut its IC forecast by nearly half.

The global semiconductor market is expected to grow by 4.7 percent to $267.7 billion in 2008, according to the WSTS. In 2007, the IC market grew 3.2 percent.

"The current projections have been reduced by 4.4 percentage points compared to the forecast that WSTS issued in November last year, mainly due to a weak Q4 2007," the group said.

However, 2009 and 2010 remained close to the original projections with 5.8 percent and 8.8 percent growth, respectively.

"The WSTS predicts a continuously growing demand for electronic products such as PCs, digital consumer appliances, mobile communications and automotive electronics, enhanced by the increase of semiconductor content per installed system," said Ulrich Schaefer, worldwide chairman, WSTS, in a statement.
