Softbank Corp. has sealed a deal with Apple Inc. to sell iPhones later this year in Japan, according to an Associated Press report.

Spokesman Naoki Nakayama gave no further details on pricing and dates but disclosed it was not clear if the deal was exclusive.

The Japanese mobile carrier has 18.77 million subscribers in Japan, trailing in third place behind mobile service providers NTT DoCoMo and KDDI Corp.

With the iPhone win, DoCoMo spokesman Shinjiro Minami said the company was unhappy that Softbank had beaten it to an iPhone deal it has had also been vying for the deal. He added that the user interface of the iPhone is very attractive and the product was sure to draw Apple fans in Japan. He, however, said it is still unclear if it will continue to pursue Apple for an iPhone deal.
