Intel Corp.'s Craig Barrett has signed an agreement with Rosnanotech, Russia's state nanotechnology organization, for co-development in several areas including sub-45nm ICs.

The agreement was signed at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, held June 6 to 8.

The joint research work is in several nanotechnology areas and will include the development of new materials for the production of sub-45nm ICs, according to Rosnanotech. Additionally, Intel and Rosnanotech plan co-research in multiprocessor and multicore systems, as well as in software for modeling nanomaterials. Management training and technology commercialization are also part of the agreement, which also aims to spark Russian start-up activity from the research.

The value of the agreement wasn't disclosed.

In 2007, the Russian state allotted 130 billion rubles (about $5.5 billion) to Rosnanotech, which aims to build Russia's nanotechnology infrastructure.

Among its activities are making early stage investments in nanotechnology projects with private sector partners and involvement in business incubators and investment funds. "Collaboration with Intel affords us the opportunity to build on the solid foundation of practical application of scientific development," said Leonid Melamed, general director of Rosnanotech, in a statement.
