An application that turns any Nokia smartphone into a hotspot takes the trophy at the 2008 Navteq Global LBS Challenge in Asia Pacific, Navteq announced at the CommunicAsia 2008 show in Singapore.

Grand winner Joikusoft's JoikuSpot solution and the other winning applications presented the wide range of possible LBS uses.

JoikuSpot, is a free location-aware mobile software solution that turns Nokia smartphones into hotspots. When JoikuSpot software is installed on the phone, laptops and Internet tablets, it can establish wireless Internet connections via the phone's 3G connection. Virtually any wireless device can become its own hotspot.

First runner-up Road-Guard's GreenDrive technology helps drivers develop smart and safe driving techniques that lead to 10-25 percent fuel savings. Second runner up Point-I's On2Gether social networking solution provides communication, location information, security and entertainment in one package. And third runner up's Pacific DataVision's SkyMail enables mobile workers to send quickly a prioritized voice message with their location from a mobile phone to any email address in the world.

Driving LBS
The digital map data provider pioneered the challenge in 2003 to drive location-based services (LBS). Kelly Smith, senior VP of corporate marketing at Navteq, said the company recognized that there is a "healthy community of application developers" for LBS, so they launched the challenge as an "opportunity to grow our business by driving the entire location based industry."

Kelly said that the LBS challenge "provides a forum for small talented companies to get access to large carriers, device manufacturers and venture capitalists," while at the same time providing an "efficient way to find the talents and solutions that will ultimately drive average revenue per user."

The success of the challenge is shown by the fact that "over 25 percent of finalists have received contracts or VC funding as a direct result of their participation in the LBS challenge," Kelly added.
