Hermetically sealed resistors built for high-reliability apps

Aimed at high-reliability applications, Vishay Intertechnology Inc. has introduced the oil-filled, hermetically sealed VHP203 ultrahigh-precision Z-Foil resistor. Touted as an industry breakthrough, the hermetic sealing eliminates the ingress of moisture and oxygen, while the oil acts as a thermal conductor, thus eliminating the long-term degradation experienced by elements in unsealed resistors, while at the same time allowing the device to accept short periods of overload without degradation, Vishay said.

The miniature VHP203 device provides a low absolute temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of 0.05ppm/C from 0C to 60C and 0.2ppm/C from -55C to 125C, 25C Ref; a power coefficient of 5ppm at rated power, and a tolerance of 0.001 percent (10ppm).

Other key specifications include a load-life stability 0.002 percent for 2,000hrs at 60C at 0.1W, a power rating of 0.3W at 25C, a low voltage coefficient of The device can withstand electrostatic discharges exceeding 25kV for increased reliability. Within a resistance range of 10 to 150k, any value at any tolerance is available through calibration at no additional cost.

Based on Vishay's "Z-Foil" technology, which provides a significant reduction of the resistive component's sensitivity to ambient temperature variations (TCR) and applied power changes (PCR), in combination with an accuracy of 0.001 percent and long-term shelf life of 2ppm for at least 10 years, the device is optimized for high-precision instrumentation amplifiers, bridge networks, and differential amplifiers in high-accuracy products where humidity resistance and high stability are required. Typical products include laboratory, metrology, measurement, medical and test equipment.

For U.S. delivery starts at $10. Samples and production quantities are available now, with lead times of 72hrs for samples, and three weeks for standard orders.
