STMicroelectronics has launched 1MHz two-wire serial EEPROMs in 256Kbit, 512Kbit and 1Mbit densities, compatible with I?C Fast-Mode-Plus allowing data rates up to 2.5x faster than the I?C Fast-mode. Operating at 1MHz, the M24M01-HR is able to complete a 1Mbit data transaction in 1 second; the 256Kbit M24256-BHR in a quarter of a second; and the 512Kbit M24512-HR in half a second.

The two-wire serial EEPROM supports multiple access modes, including byte-write mode as well as 64-, 128- and 256byte page-write modes, random and sequential read modes, and automatic address incrementing. Besides easing design, these modes help engineers optimize system performance and power consumption. A write-control input is also provided while three chip-enable pins allow up to eight devices on a single bus. Aiding design-in for low-voltage or standard-voltage systems, all three densities are available in variants operating from 1.8V to 5.5V or 2.5V to 5.5V.

ST's advanced fabrication process has enabled the speed advantages of 1MHz operation at a competitive cost, and in a choice of three miniature surface-mount package styles including TSSOP8 and a 3.8mm-width SO-8. Low package heights of 1.2mm and 1.75mm, respectively, allow use in low-profile consumer products such as digital TVs. All packages use ST's ECOPACK technology, which meets international green packaging codes including the EU RoHS requirements.

Additionally, the devices deliver robust performance in the field, with specified durability of one-million write cycles and more than 40 years data retention.

Samples of the 256Kbit, 512Kbit and 1Mbit devices are available in the SO-8 packages. Samples in TSSOP packaging are available in 256Kbit and 512Kbit densities. Unit pricing, in high-volume quantities, is $1.40 for the 1Mbit device; $0.80 for 512Kbit; and $0.55 for 256Kbit.
