Survey: Mobile TV, Wi-Fi, games turn off handset users

A survey conducted by ABI Research found that mobile phone users are not too keen to have Wi-Fi, mobile TV or games on their handsets, but do rate highly camera functionality, Bluetooth connectivity, and music/radio playback.

The survey of just over 1,400 wireless subscribers in seven countries also uncovered some significant variations between geographical markets in the "must have" features specified.

ABI found that camera functionality with at least 2Mpixel leads the pack, with 47 percent of respondents listing this feature as vital, followed by Bluetooth at 34 percent and music/FM radio functionality just behind in third place at 32 percent.

However, camera phones were more than twice as important for consumers in Taiwan versus those in the United States. Similarly, Bluetooth is considered essential by mobile subscribers in Western Europe and Taiwan, but penetration of this feature is very low in Japan and South Korea.

Another, perhaps not surprising result is that, as Clint Wheelock, VP and research officer at ABI notes, "It's still a voice-centric world." Users in all mature markets still choose their mobile operator based on "the basics": price, friends/family on the same network, and network coverage.

The three most common features that subscribers have on their current mobile phones are: games (64 percent), Internet access (61 percent), and 2Mpixel cameras (58 percent), but it seems the first two functions are rarely used.

"Many mobile data and multimedia services are failing to reach the mainstream not because they are unavailable, but because they fail to provide a satisfactory user experience and pricing model for most consumers," noted Wheelock.
