Group implements multicore management standard

The Multicore Association, a nonprofit organization focused on developing standards for products that involve multicore implementations, has announced the formation of the Multicore Resource Management API working group (MRAPI).

The goal of the working group is to develop an industry-standard API that specifies the application-level resource management capabilities necessary to coordinate concurrent access to system resources. The MRAPI specification will complement the consortium's already completed Multicore Communication API, as well as future API specifications.

Need for standards
There is no standard for processor resource management for embedded applications so that engineers can produce their own approach to the task, according to the group. Standardization would allow multicore processor vendors and third-party tool vendors to take over the resource management aspects and enable system developers to focus their efforts on their application software.

Benefits of a good system
"Application constraints faced by multicore system developers do not always allow for a symmetrical multiprocessing OS running across all the cores in a multiprocessor SoC, preventing reliance on the OS for resource management, as has been the traditional approach to concurrent resource sharing for decades," noted Jim Holt, senior member of the technical staff, Freescale Semiconductor and chair, MRAPI working group. "Without a standard such as MRAPI, system developers are forced to create and maintain their own solutions for sharing the multiprocessor SoC resources among tasks in their applications."

The Multicore Association did not say how many individuals apart from Holt are working in the MRAPI working group or which company or companies are represented.
