Mobile WiMAX gets high stability from power amp

SiGe Semiconductor has introduced a 2.5GHz power amplifier targeted at the mobile WiMAX market. The SE7262L power amp delivers high-output power and high stability while exceeding the spectral mask requirements outlined in IEEE 802.16e and WiMAX Forum specifications.

The SE7262L is said to deliver extremely high stability over the full temperature range of -40C to +85C, enabling manufacturers to support broadband wireless multimedia services in products for mobile computing applications without compromising battery life. It is well suited for battery-powered applications including USB accessories, PC cards, and embedded cards for laptops.

The power amplifier delivers more than 20 percent efficiency at +25.5dBm output power while operating at 3.3V, which is the highest performance available while meeting worldwide spectral mask requirements, according to SiGe. The combination of high-output power, high linearity, high efficiency and high stability over temperature enable systems that require low current for increased battery life while providing highly reliable wireless link performance.

With the SE7262L, designers do not need additional circuitry and voltage regulation. Before the SE7262L, available mobile WiMAX power amplifiers often needed an increase in supply voltage in order to achieve higher output power, which required additional voltage regulation, resulting in increased power consumption and cost to the BOM, SiGe said.

In addition, the SE7262L power amplifier offers high levels of integration, featuring an on-chip power detector, step attenuator, and harmonic filter in a 4mm x 4mm x 0.9mm package.

Pricing starts at $2.85 in quantities of 10,000. Devices are sampling now. Full applications design support including evaluation boards is available to qualified customers.
