China will issue 3G mobile licenses and certificates after the restructuring of the six 'big' telecommunications operators in the country. This is according to a report from citing Xi Guohua, vice minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China as source.

Under the six-month restructuring plan, China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom will get TD-SCDMA, CDMA2000 and W-CDMA, respectively.

The report noted, citing Xi, that foreign visitors to the Beijing Olympic Games will not be able to use their W-CDMA and CDMA2000 EVDO mobile phones in China. This is because China has not issued the license for the 3G mobile phones. However, TD-SCDMA will be an exception. As a test for enlarging the network of TD-SCDMA as well as to enable 3G services during the Olympic Games, China Mobile will offer at least 20,000 3G handsets for hire during the Olympic Games, which will be made available to foreign visitors.
