Gainers, losers in IC rankings

In terms of worldwide IC sales in 1H 08, Intel Corp. was in first place, followed by Samsung, Texas Instruments Inc., Toshiba, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., STMicroelectronics, Renesas Technology, Hynix Semiconductor, Sony and Qualcomm, according to IC Insights Inc., a market research firm.
The firm highlighted the companies that have shown improvement:
- Qualcomm, a fabless cellphone chipmaker, jumped four spots and ranked as the 10th largest IC supplier in the 1H 08.
- Moving up one rank higher were TSMC and Renesas.
- Panasonic, previously known as Matsushita, and NEC Electronics Corp. were boosted by the strong Japanese yen vs. the U.S. dollar. Each climbed three places higher and moved into the 18th and 12th posts, respectively, in the top 20 ranking.
- Broadcom Corp, a fabless chipmaker, took three positions higher and is now ranked as the 20th largest IC supplier in the world.
Meanwhile, the companies considered at the losing end were Qimonda AG that dropped 12 positions from its 18th ranking overall in 2007 to 30th in 1H 08. NXP Semiconductors fell four spots from 10th to 14th. Advanced Micro Devices slid four positions from 11th to 15th.
