TOSA/ROSA solution supports HDMI 1.3

Omron Electronic Components Europe has released bi-directional optical subassembly (OSA) pairs suitable for HDMI 1.3 high-definition (HD) video transmissions at speeds of up to 3.5Gbit/s.

The Omron P1TX/ RX6A-SX51 TOSA/ ROSA is a solution that offers video system designers an alternative to copper-based transmission lines, addressing the long-distance data transfer challenges demanded in the bandwidth-intensive, high-speed data applications associated with HDMI 1.3 compliant HD video and audio formats. The SX51 TOSA device transmits three video and one high-speed clock (digital data lanes) at up to 3.5Gbit/s and the SX51 ROSA receives these signals and transmits and receives one low-speed signal all on one multi-mode fibre. The configuration enables the ROSA to output a control signal that greatly increases the flexibility of system design, especially in HDMI 1.3 applications where manufacturers can implement their own system specific features.

SX51 fully supports HDMI 1.3 requirements and specifications enabling advanced deep-color support, which utilizes up to 16bits per pixel, providing a dynamic spectrum of colors ranging in the billions of shades, as well as true lossless audio playback through Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio formats.

"The SX51 offers an advanced solution to single fibre transmission at an attractive cost where many customers have traditionally used copper as the transmission medium. By offering an easy to deploy product like SX51, Omron is leading the way towards mass-adoption of fibre optics across the entire spectrum of video distribution customers," said Steve Drumm, market development manager for the photonics products, at Omron.

Enhanced SX4
Omron also introduced the SX4B, an enhanced version of its SX4A product offering lower power consumption and a higher data rate. The P1TX4B-SX4-01 TOSA will accept PECL, CML and LVDS inputs while the P1RX4B-SX4-01 ROSA outputs are compatible with CML. Due to the use of an improved driver, the transmitter exhibits a 60 percent lower power consumption compared with the SX4A, and the SX4B-D version can handle a higher data rate of 3.5Gbit/s per channel. The SX4B also features a new angled optics block for improved mechanical mounting.

Added support
Omron is supporting both the new SX51 and the SX4 with design tools including a MCU reference circuit, reference circuits for TOSA input/ ROSA output, reference circuit for the low speed VCSEL (SX51), reference circuit for the low speed photo detector (SX51) and laser driver code .hex and .ee files.

Both SX4 and SX51 design tool packages are available on request, free of charge. In addition, new information packages are also available to aid customers to become more familiar with TOSA/ ROSA function and application.

SX4B and SX51 evaluation boards and evaluation kits to aid fast track design-ins are also available at additional cost.
