RIO devices improve embedded control system

During National Instruments Corp.'s (NI) Week, the company has launched new single-board RIO devices that provide a low-cost, integrated hardware option for deploying embedded control and data acquisition applications. The eight sbRIO-96xx devices integrate an embedded real-time processor, reconfigurable FPGA and analog and digital I/O on a single PCB.

"The NI LabVIEW graphical system design platform customizes the NI single-board RIO hardware and develops all aspects of embedded systems for increased productivity and shorter time-to-market," said NI. Since all RIO technology platforms can be programmed with LabView, no recoding is needed when shifting from prototype to deployment.

The devices expand the FPGA-based deployment platform offering including PXI, PC and the CompactRIO embedded control and data acquisition system that share the reconfigurable I/O RIO architecture. They offer an operating temperature from -20C to 55C for thermally rugged applications as well as an integrated 19Vdc to 30Vdc power supply input and real-time clock with battery backup for increased reliability.

The single-board RIO devices feature an industrial 266MHz or 400MHz Freescale MPC5200 processor built on Power Architecture technology, the Wind River VxWorks RTOS and Xilinx Spartan-3 FPGA. The onboard analog and digital I/O connects directly to the FPGA to give low-level customization of timing and I/O signal processing. I/O capabilities can be stretched using the devices' three-expansion slots for connecting any NI C-Series I/O module or custom modules. There are more than 40 C Series modules for I/O and communication such as acceleration, temperature, power quality, CAN and motion. All RIO products are RoHS-compliant.
