'Smallest' audio device generates highest output power

Maxim Integrated Products Inc. has launched MAX9877, the industry's smallest audio subsystem. It provides high-efficiency, high-power, mono Class D speaker amplifier; a DirectDrive, stereo headphone amplifier; and a low-noise, bypass analog switch.

As an added feature, the new compact audio system uses the company's third-generation, ultralow EMI, Class D amplifier technology to give Class AB audio capacity with Class D perfoiramnce. It provides 725mW output power from 3.7V supply into an 8 load with 85 percent (max) efficiency. Offering the industry's highest output power from a Li-ion battery, the MAX9877 is designed for many applications like cellphones, portable media players and others that need high audio quality, output power and efficiency.

The company's patented, DirectDrive architecture creates a ground-referenced output from a single supply, thus reducing the need for large DC-blocking capacitors. Maximizing efforts to save cost and space, the MAX9877 uses Maxim's active-emissions limiting and patented spread-spectrum modulation, which significantly minimize EMI and draws away the output filters needed by Class D amplifiers. In addition, the compact, low-noise, analog DPST switch allows the Class D amplifier to be bypassed to lower power use in portables, reducing the need for an external switch. The MAX9877 also features input mixing, volume control, comprehensive click-and-pop suppression, and a flexible, user-defined input architecture with three preamplifier gain settings. All controls are employed through an I2C interface.

The MAX9877 is packaged in a 2.5mm x 2mm, 20-bump WLP that is fully noted over the -40C to +85C extended temperature range.
