Sony Electronics extends its wide range of media options with the release of three "tapeless" solutions that give customers multiple recording choices and workflow flexibility. The new products cover the industry's first 32Gbyte SxS PRO solid-state memory card, a 16GByte Pro CompactFlash card, and the PHU-60K, a 60Gbyte professional HDD. Each device promises optimum performance and recording functions and integrates Sony's other professional HD camcorders like the HVR-Z7U and HVR-S270U hybrid HDV models, as part of the solid state XDCAM EX camera series.

"If you are making documentary or gathering electronic news or perhaps an independent producer, may be streaming video on the Web, or involved in any professional video production, the new tapeless media solutions will surely help you to get your work done," said Ron Corn, director of product marketing, Sony Electronics' professional media group. "Each package has powerful features providing our customers with the best workflow solutions and versatility," he added.

He noted that the new Sony media products meet the requirements of the HD workflow with higher bandwidth content to get optimal efficiencies particularly regarding higher-speed data transfer rates.

With the capacity to take data transfer rates of up to 800Mbit/s, Sony's 32GByte SxS PRO memory card can be employed with the family of XDCAM EX camcorders such as PMW-EX1 and PMW-EX3. The capability offered by the improved solid-state card helps the camcorder to give slow and quick motion functions, which are called "over" and "under-cranking."

The card has record times of up to 100min of full 1920 x 1080 high-definition video (HDV) at 35Mbit/s and 140min of 1440 by 1080 video at 25Mbit/s. Sony tests have shown it can be removed and re-inserted into a memory slot more than 30,000 times, and is shock resistant to forces of more than 1,500G.

Sony's 16Gbyte Pro CF cards, which support the latest professional HDV camcorders, such as the HVR-S270U and HVR-Z7U, can provide up to 72min of record time. They enable video production workers with a reliable media recording solution certified by Sony with high write speeds of 306x, providing an excellent hybrid workflow solution for moving content to nonlinear editing systems.

With the ability to provide more than 4hr of uninterrupted record time on Sony's PMW-EX1 or PM-EX3 camcorders, the PHU-60K HDD puts tapeless option to a new level.

It is a 1.8-inch, 60Gbyte external storage unit with an USB 2.0 interface. Users can have about recording times of 200min in 35Mbit/s high-quality mode and 260min in 25Mbit/s standard play mode.

The HDD unit works like an SxS PRO card, with thumbnail views available on the LCD panel of the camcorders or deck.

The PHU-60K has Cybercapture technology, which helps the HDD to optimize the read/write process resulting in sustained transfer rates and reliability. It also gives a new "dumping" system in protecting the HDD from a 1.5m drop, and a buffer memory is used to make easy recording once the power is on.

A 3G sensor and the buffer memory permit stable recording. When the G sensor detects that the unit is being dropped, the head of the HDD is immediately parked to protect the HDD. The content is temporarily stored in the buffer memory and then restored in the HDD when it is working again. The unit works for about 12hr of continuous record time on a tiny BP-U30 battery.
