Leadis Technology Inc. has introduced the LDS535, a 480-channel, one billion-color active-matrix OLED (AMOLED) source driver IC.

The device features CMOS data and reduced swing differential signaling interface, 10bit gray level capability, VDD power regulator and RGB Separate Gamma.

The LDS535 is targeted at mid-sized AMOLED displays supporting WQVGA to SVGA resolution with CMOS data interface. The features of the LDS535 make it a suitable solution for devices requiring vivid color display with low power consumption, such as portable media players, DMB, electronic dictionary and other home applications.

"With this AMOLED driver we are extending a leadership position in the existing AMOLED mobile display market to the emerging variable portable electronics products market," said Keeho Kim, GM of the display driver business unit at Leadis. "This is the first of many products that we are developing for the mid-size AMOLED display market."

AMOLED technology offers advantages of fast switching speeds, vivid colors, low power consumption and competitive costs. Although adoption of AMOLED technology into high volume consumer markets has been slow to date, AMOLED technology is expected to capture market share in the competitive flat panel display market of small screens for mobile phones and portable digital audio players (MP3 players), digital cameras and high-resolution microdisplays for head-mounted displays. Such portable applications favor the high light output of AMOLEDs for readability in sunlight, as well as low power consumption.
