Thin-film chip resistor gears up for automotive

Vishay Intertechnology Inc. has claimed the industry's first professional automotive thin-film chip resistor in a 0603 case size with a high operating temperature up to +175C (1,000 hours) and an advanced level of rated power. Vishay's professional devices are defined as those with 1 percent or .5 percent tolerance and a temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of 50ppm or 25ppm.

Featuring an absolute TCR down to 25ppm/K with a 0.5 percent tolerance, the MCT 0603 AT resistor offers resistance values from 100? to 100k? and a 75V operating voltage. While most thin-film chip resistors offer power ratings to 100mW at +70C ambient temperature, the power rating of the MCT 0603 AT is specified to 150mW at +85C. The device's 0.85mm x 1.55mm package with low 0.45mm profile enables the design of high-density circuits.

With an excellent moisture resistivity specified to The resistor delivers stable performance for automotive electronics including engine control units, gearbox controls, body electronics, and safety, power supply, and braking systems. Other applications include industrial electronics such as energy management, measurement, sensors, scales, and precision amplifiers; telecommunication base stations; and medical equipment.

The resistor is RoHS compliant and compatible with Pb-free and tin/lead (Sn/Pb) reflow and vapor-phase soldering processes. It also complies with the GADSL and the CEFIC-EECA-EICTA list of legal restrictions on hazardous substances. This includes full compliance with the EU's End of Vehicle life (ELV), RoHS and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) directives.

Vishay plans to extend the MC AT series to 0805 and 1206 case sizes in 2008 and introduce a precision version.

For U.S. delivery varies by quantity and specifications, and is typically priced at $30.00/1,000 pieces. Samples and production quantities are available now, with lead times of five to six weeks for larger orders.
