Compact capacitors deliver volumetric efficiency

Vishay Intertechnology Inc. has expanded its 298D series of MicroTan solid tantalum chip capacitors giving an industry-best capacitance-voltage rating in the molded 0402 package size.

With its patented multi-array packaging assembly technology, Vishay's 298D MicroTan capacitors have been designed to offer high capacitance-voltage ranging from 4.7?F-4V to 10?F-4V. They are in the ultracompact 1.0mm x 0.5mm 0402 K-case with a low 0.60mm maximum profile. Along with the formerly released 0603 M-case and 0805 P-case, the series gives a capacitance-voltage range of 0.68?F-35V to 220?F-4V.

These capacitors represent a major innovation in volumetric efficiency. Designers typically need to use two 4.7?F-4V capacitors to filter and minimize harmonic distortion in MP3 players. With the availability of a 10?F-4V device in a compact package, Vishay helps designers to lower their capacitor parts count while having superior audio performance not possible with multilayer ceramic capacitors caused by their piezoelectric noise. Aside from MP3 players, the tantalum capacitors are suitable for audio filtering and signal processing in handsets, digital cameras and other portable devices, where their industry-best ratings produce more stylish end-products using less PCB space and minimized product thickness.

The devices' rectangular molded case presentation suits high-volume PCB assembly, while the special L-shaped facedown terminations gives enough contact to the solder pad than common facedown style terminations.

Samples of the chip capacitors are available in the market and the production quantities will be out by September 2008 having a lead-time of eight to 10 weeks for bulk orders.
