TV chip market up for growth, consolidation

The global market for TV ICs was 29.8 million units in Q2 08, up 21 percent on the same period last year, with shipments 7.8 percent better than in Q1 08, according to DisplaySearch.

However, market researchers warn that vertically integrated players like Samsung and Panasonic are set to force consolidation in the market.

DisplaySearch say the two main drivers in Q2 were TV set makers building in line with seasonality and rapid flat panel TV sales growth in the U.S. and Eastern Europe.

Mediatek remained the top supplier, with a 19.8 percent share, or 5.9 million units, as design demand grew from Taiwan ODMs, in particular with the launch of price-fighting models for North America for Samsung and Sony.

Trident took second spot with 11 percent, down from over 15 percent in Q1.

DisplaySearch says Zoran and MStar continue strong growth as design-wins at ODMs in Taiwan increase production.

STMicroelectronics, which acquired Genesis earlier this year, climbed to fourth slot for an estimated 8.4 percent market share, or 2.5 million units.

In its analysis, DisplaySearch notes two IC vendors can occupy the same system board for different functions e.g. MPEG decode and video processing, which can give an element of double counting.

"The battles in TV chips are by no means over," said Paul Gray, director of European TV Research.

"Mediatek's growth has slowed as Samsung's in-house TV IC has appeared in midrange Samsung TVs, and Mediatek has been displaced from much of Samsung's product range. Increasingly vertically integrated players like Samsung and Panasonic are going to force consolidation in the rest of the market."
