Emerson Network Power has launched two new high-efficiency bulk front-end power supplies for systems that use distributed power architectures. Rated at 1200W and 2000W respectively, the DS1200-3 and DS2000-3 power supplies generate a main payload output of 12Vdc and an auxiliary output of 3.3Vdc for powering standby circuitry. An alternative auxiliary output of 5Vdc is optionally available. Both power supplies are digitally programmable!they are equipped with an I?C interface and use the industry-standard PMBus communications protocol.

Forming the latest additions to Emerson Network Power's popular and expanding DS series product line, the DS1200-3 and DS2000-3 are intended primarily for use in rack-mounting server type applications, such as data centers. The power supplies use an advanced power conversion topology to maximize efficiency and have exceptionally compact form factors; both models have a height of just 40mm (1.6 inches), which makes them ideal for use in 1U high rack-mounting equipment, says Emerson.

According to the company, the DS1200-3 and DS2000-3 power supplies feature a very wide 90-264Vac input voltage range and employ active power factor correction to minimize input harmonic current distortion and to ensure compliance with the international EN61000-3-2 standard!they have a power factor of 0.99 typical. The power supplies also feature active AC inrush control, to automatically limit inrush current at turn-on to 55A maximum.

Both power supplies employ a new patent-pending ultrahigh efficiency conversion topology, together with an innovative power transformer and rectifier construction that further improves power density and reduces interconnect power losses. The power supplies' main +12Vdc payload output is digitally programmable over the range 11.4-12.6Vdc, and users have a choice of standard I?C or advanced PMBus communications. The control software runs under Windows on any standard PC, and uses a highly intuitive graphical user interface to simplify power supply set-up.

The DS1200-3 can deliver up to 98.4A from its main +12Vdc payload output, and up to 6A from its +3.3Vdc auxiliary output. The supply has a 1U x 2U form factor!it measures 28.4 x 8.1 cm, with a height of 4.0cm!and has a power density of more than 1.3W per cubic centimetre. When fed with a 180-264Vac input, the DS1200-3 can achieve a very high!91 percent typical!conversion efficiency at 50 percent full load.

The DS2000-3 power supply is capable of delivering up to 164.2A from its main +12Vdc payload output, and up to 9A from its auxiliary +3.3Vdc output. The DS2000-3 has a 1U x 3U form factor! it measures 29.6cm x 10.7cm x 4.0cm!and has an exceptionally high power density in excess of 1.5W/cm3. When fed with a 180 to 264 Vac input, the power supply can achieve in excess of 92 percent efficiency between 50 percent and 75 percent full load.

DS1200-3 and DS2000-3 power supplies offer active single-wire current sharing which operates from 10 to 100 percent of full load, enabling multiple supplies to be easily paralleled for very high current applications. Both supplies are hot pluggable, have no minimum load requirement, and incorporate low-loss internal ORing FETs (Field Effect Transistors) on their main 12V output, for fault-tolerant and N+1 redundancy applications.

Both power supplies contain a serial EEPROM that is pre-programmed with data about the unit!including its type, serial number and date of manufacture!to facilitate replacement in the field. A built-in I?C interface, which uses the PMBus communications protocol, enables the data to be read back to the system under power; the interface also allows the system to interrogate the power supply to ascertain various operational parameters, including input and output status, fan blocked or running under-speed, and overcurrent and overvoltage flags.

DS1200-3 and DS2000-3 power supplies incorporate fan cooling with automatic speed control and have an ambient operating temperature range of -10<C to +50<C, with 50 percent derating at +70<C. The power supplies meet the rigorous EN55022-B and FCC part 15 Class B conducted and radiated emissions standards, and comply with applicable EMC immunity standards, including EN61000-3-2 and -3, and EN61000-4-2, -3, -4, -5 and -11. The supplies carry EN60950 and UL/cUL 60950 safety approvals.
