Leica Camera AG is expected to develop an image processor for high-end SLR cameras in partnership with Fujitsu Microelectronics. The device will feature a RISC controller CPU and a DSP.

"The Maestro image processor will be made solely for Leica and is anticipated to power the maker's planned S2 high-end SLR. It is optimized for fast compression of high-resolution, large data using extremely low power," Leica said. Aside from codec functions, other tasks of the processor include noise reduction and transferring image data between main memory and memory card.

The processor architecture is according to Fujitsu's Milbeaut technology and has an FR-80 RISC control processor and an FR-V VLIW digital signal processor, enhanced by several additional hardware accelerators. The processor will be made in Japan by Fujitsu, while the camera will be developed in Solms, Germany. "The processor will be out in the market by summer 2009," a Leica spokesman said.
