One introduction at the Photokina Trade Show in Koln, Germany should make mobile camera manufacturers take note. The partnership of Silicon Hive and Acutelogic has led to the release of a new family of HiveGo programmable camera imaging subsystems for SoC makers in the handset and consumer electronics space.

By the collaboration of the advanced parallel processing and digital imaging technologies, the efforts of both Silicon Hive and Acutelogic resulted in the first subsystems that deliver programmability at 16Mpixel images and sufficient processor headroom that helps to upgrade features and software in the future.

Atul Sinha, CEO, Silicon Hive, said: "Driven by consumer demand, the rapid pace in improved image quality and new features in various camera systems needs an integrated, scalable, and flexible camera solution. The partnership lets both companies to gain from technology synergies and strong footholds in different market segments and geographies, having a worldwide presence and round-the-clock customer support."

The three initial products offered as licensed IP are:

? HiveGo CSS 3016J, which targets digicam, digital video camera and ultramobile PC cameras, includes Silicon Hive's third generation HiveFlex ISP 2300 scalable single instruction, multiple data processor, control processor, and accelerators for filters, scaling, smooth digital zoom and distortion correction. The hardware configuration gets ultrahigh quality still capture at up to 260Mpixel/s, or 16Mpixel at 15fps 'on the fly,' or capturing and processing HD video streams at 1080p 60fps. Camera input formats such as SMIA-CCP2 and MIPI-CS12 are supported. Robust GPIO connections for camera systems controls such as lens, focus and flash are included.

? HiveGo CSS 3012J targets high quality imaging demands of mobile Internet devices. The mid product performs still capture at up to 200Mpixel/s or 12Mpixel at 15fps.

? HiveGo CSS 3108J targets high-volume smart phones, performing still capture of up to 130Mpixel/s or 8Mpixel images at 15fps.

Examples of Acutelogic's complete ISP and 3A software libraries which allow SoC manufacturers to customize and differentiate their own implementations of HiveGo CSS 3016J solutions.

"For mobile applications, high-definition movie functions will soon become available in the market. There is no doubt that such mobile devices will require a high-performance feature set and very low-power use simultaneously. Silicon Hive has finally solved this long-time trade-off issue," said Osamu Fukushima, CEO, Acutelogic.

Acutelogic's image signal processing technology and auto white balance, auto exposure and auto focus (3A) technology, provide a complete software package. The full range of algorithms provides highlights such as correcting lens imperfections, noise reduction and removal of artifacts. Generally, the software library has over 30 different functions with other anticipated functions.
