At least $2.1 billion in 1H 08 sales are needed to make the top 20 ranking. Intel stayed on top while Broadcom closed the list, jumping from 23 in 2007 to 20 in 1H 08. (Click to view full table.)

A big shakeup in the top 20 semiconductor supplier ranking for 1H 08 has been reported by IC Insights Inc. Although the top four ranked companies stayed put in their spots, there were a number of "movers and shakers" up and down the list.

In terms of worldwide IC sales in 1H 08, Intel Corp. was in first place, followed in order by Samsung, Texas Instruments, Toshiba, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., STMicroelectronics, Renesas, Hynix, Sony and Qualcomm. In the list, there are six Japanese companies, three European, two South Korean and one Taiwan company. The remaining eight are U.S. companies, including three fabless semiconductor suppliers.

Moving up
The biggest leap was made by fabless cellphone chipmaker Qualcomm Inc. The company jumped four spots to become the 10th largest semiconductor supplier in 1H, according to IC Insights.

The performances of Panasonic Corp., formerly Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., and NEC Electronics Corp. were boosted by the strong Japanese yen vs. the U.S. dollar. Each company climbed three places and moved into the 18th and 12th positions, respectively, in the top 20 rankings.

TSMC achieved the biggest increase in sales among the top 20 IC companies, gaining 35 percent in 1H 08 over 1H 07. (Click to view full table.)

Moving up one place each in the rankings were TSMC and Renesas Technology Corp.

Broadcom Corp. rose three positions to make it to the rankings as the 20th largest semiconductor supplier in the world.

Stepping down
The biggest fall in ranking was registered by DRAM-supplier Qimonda AG, dropping 12 positions from being ranked 18th overall in 2007 to 30th in 1H 08, according to IC Insights.

NXP Semiconductors fell four spots to 14th from 10th. Advanced Micro Devices Inc. also slid four positions from 11th to 15th.

Hynix Semiconductor Inc. fell one spot in the ranking to the eighth position after a 23 percent drop in 1H 08/1H 07 sales. This was the only 1H 08/1H 07 sales decline of any top 20 semiconductor supplier.
