Media processor secures better capacity for HD SoCs

Sigma Designs has released its SMP8644 media processor SoC, intended for feature-rich consumer products, along with next-generation IPTV STBs, IP cable STBs and Blu-ray players.

The SMP8644 is compatible with improved decoder engines with high-definition (HD) video decoding, H.264 (MPEG-4 part 10), Windows Media Video 9, VC-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 (part 2), and the adaptive voltage scaling standard. The processor multimedia core consists of high-capacity graphics acceleration, multistandard audio decoding with three on-chip DSP engines, which are essential in decoding all required standards, as well as DTS-HD MA 7.1, advanced display processing capabilities and HDMI 1.3 output.

Powerful content security is attained through a dedicated secure processor, on-chip flash memory and other digital rights management engines for high-speed payload decryption. The SMP8644 has various system peripherals like dual Ethernet controller, dual USB 2.0 controller, NAND and NOR flash controllers, IR controller and a dual SATA controller.

The media processor has a 667MHz MIPS main CPU, giving 1330 DMIPS to enable crisp user interaction and many application-based features. A second MIPS processor known as intelligent power unit manages real-time interrupt operations and offloads difficult system tasks like networking and graphics to maximize main CPU usage. A third MIPS processor is used for all system security functions such as decryption and key generation.
