Integrated Device Technology Inc. (IDT) has released a new set of high-definition (HD) audio codecs that offer improved capability and fidelity, and design flexibility for multimedia notebooks and enterprise desktops. With upgraded power optimization, the new series offers fully integrated capless headphone and stereo speaker amplifiers rolled into a compact chip.

The first two devices are Class A/B devices that are developed to achieve top-quality audio performance. The IDT 92HD81 device is a four-channel, single-chip audio system that has dynamic thermal management and designed primarily for cost-sensitive notebooks, netbooks, mobile Internet devices and ultramobile PCs. IDT said the device carries a temperature sensor that slowly reduces the device's volume if the temperature is raised beyond the specified limitations and gradually brings the volume back to normal as the device cools, unlike the common thermal protection, which stops the audio playback.

The IDT 92HD83 device is a six-channel version featuring the industry's first integrated dual capless headphone amplifiers aimed at the high-end multimedia notebook market that provides 5.1 surround audio. It also gives the option of connecting multiple users to the end device.

The company added that the audio codec series backs the Intel low-power ECR15B initiative employing maximum battery life by automatically entering a low-power mode with no audio activity, resuming within 10ms of audio starting effectively by minimizing pops and clicks to an inaudible level. The devices support a 1.5V to 1.8V or 3.3V nominal digital supply and either a 3.3V or 5V nominal analog supply.

The new equipment also include the proprietary IDT HD sound GUI that helps makers to provide end users with easy-to-use control of a PC audio system using a customized and complete audio software. The HD sound GUI offers intuitive initial individual set-up, I/O audio jack configurability, and permits end users to dynamically adjust their audio experience according to application, environment and content.
