Nine electronics products designed and manufactured in Asia were named winners of the second Global Sources Electronics Design Awards.

The Design of the Year Award went to Shenzhen Voxtech's radio communication headset designed for high-end tactical applications such as military, SWAT and riot police. It is an ear-free device equipped with a dual-bone conduction speaker that converts radio-transmitted communications into mechanical vibrations that sends sound to the internal ear through the cranial bones. The other eight product category winners are as follows:

? Computer Products: Aware Electronics' ultramobile personal computer
? Flat-panel TVs: Huipu Electronic's 63-inch plasma TV
? Home Entertainment: Shenzhen Wistar Technology's vacuum tube iPod dock
? In-car Electronics: Sound Technology's in-dash touchscreen AM/FM receiver & DVD player
? Personal Electronics: Simon Trading's digital photo frame with Wi-Fi function
? Power Supplies: Dongguan Infinia Electronics' flat-USB car charger
? Security Products: Neotech Photoelectric's concealed camera
? Wireless Communication & Networking: Yealink Network Technology's IP video phone

"Over the years, Asia's engineers have absorbed the world's best technologies, and applied them in creative ways that have led to tremendous export success," said Mark Saunderson, president of Global Sources Electronics Business Unit.

"The innovative combination of technology and sophistication of these products rival those from famous global brands, highlighting the rising prowess of engineers in Asia. Together with outstanding marketing strategies, these companies have made a name for themselves in the fiercely competitive electronics industry."

The winning products and finalists are showcased at the Design Awards Gallery during this week's China Sourcing Fair: Electronics & Components at Hong Kong's Asia World-Expo from Oct. 12-15.

Saunderson said: "The Awards recognize the achievements and successes of Asian manufacturers, who design electronics products that improve our lives.

"Tens of thousands of buyers from around the world will have the chance to see these innovative products first-hand at Global Sources' Electronics & Components Fair."

The nine winners were selected out of over 200 entries from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea based on technical design; features and functionality; visual appeal; and sales, marketing and export success.

The judging panel was made up of top industry experts and executives, including Celestica's director of Asian Commodity Management, Kevin Beveridge and IBM China Procurement Company's manager of procurement services, David Hu.
