Is the Toshiba-SanDisk partnership falling apart?

Toshiba Corp. is discussing things out to purchase half of the IC equipment in a joint venture (JV) fab with SanDisk Corp. for more than 100 billion yen ($1 billion), according to Nikkei. This means Toshiba has intentions to take over a fab venture from SanDisk.

For years, Toshiba and SanDisk have been partners in different joint NAND fabs. But recently, rival Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd launched a takeover bid for SanDisk, resulting to some issues about the Toshiba-SanDisk JV. Samsung and Toshiba are rivals in NAND flash.

SanDisk has rejected the bid. But Toshiba is not taking any chances and plans to protect its interest by buying out the fab equipment from SanDisk, according to the report.

Meanwhile, Toshiba is also in talks to buy Spansion Inc., a supplier of NOR flash chips.
