MEMS microphones deliver clear sound recording

Wolfson Microelectronics has released a line of silicon microphones designed to bring crystal clear recording to multiple portable consumer devices such as handsets, portable media players, digital still cameras, video cameras, navigation devices and noise cancelling headphones.

The first devices developed are a pair of compact, high SNR analog microphones (with part numbers WM7110 and WM7120) for consumer applications that need low-power use and high signal quality. The two microphones use the company's proprietary CMOS/MEMS membrane technology known as AudioPlus True Mics, which is based on its MEMS transducer IP and uses standard CMOS foundries.

The compact WM7110 (4.72mm x 3.76mm x 1.25mm) and ultracompact WM7120 (3.76mm x 2.95mm x 1.1mm) devices usually consume 160?A. Both products provide an improved 62dB SNR (A-weighted) performance, reducing the noise floor in the microphone to meet cost-effective, crystal clear sound transduction. The devices also have low total harmonic distortion of 0.5 percent maximum at 100dB sound pressure level, high linearity and flat-phase response.

Wolfson also provides improved WM7110E and WM7120E versions of the two devices, which are the first MEMS silicon microphones to give a sensitivity tolerance of 1dB.
