Low-cost processor works with multiple connections

Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) has added a new lineup of Blackfin MCUs. These affordable, lower-power processors target VoIP telephones, mobile handheld devices, automotive- and industrial-controllers.

"We have basically taken the Blackfin processor to a lower-price point, a lower power point and have added new peripherals to make it more attractive, with a higher level of integration," said Bhaskar Banerjee, product line manager for Blackfin products, ADI.

ADI said its new Blackfin BF51x devices have instructions for control functions and DSP, along with other essential peripherals, so that the devices will only need a single MCU with few support chips. For instance, VoIP applications only require a codec and a memory-chip to implement a phone.

Four initial members of the new family employ clock speeds of up to 400MHz, 116Kbyte of RAM, an optional 4Mbyte of flash, SDIO for connectivity to standard flash memory and Wi-Fi cards. They also have on-chip lockbox security, 12 digital audio channels, 12 direct memory access channels, two dual-channel synchronous serial communication ports, high-speed parallel peripheral interface, two-wire interface, dual UARTs, two SPI-compatible serial peripheral interface ports, three-phase pulse-width modulation unit for inductive motor control and a quadrature interface for rotary encoders.

The BF516 also adds an Ethernet 10/100 MAC and the BF518 supports the IEEE 1588 clock-synchronization protocol.

Global IP Solutions has produced its VoiceEngine package of VoIP development software for the new Blackfin family. The Crosscore software and development tools are available from ADI, as are its VisualDSP++ development and debug environment.
