Compact audio codec improves capacity of portables

Texas Instruments Inc. has released the TLV320AIC3254 1.8V audio codec with integrated power management and dual miniDSP audio processing engines. Backed by the company's PurePath Studio Development Toolkit, the codec is tailored to minimize designers total audio solution cost and hasten design of advanced audio features in portable devices.

The device's highly programmable miniDSP audio processing engine helps users to run complex algorithms on the device while freeing MIPS on the primary processor. A wide range of advanced DSP capabilities include a 20-band stereo graphic equalizer, multiband dynamic range compression, custom FIR and infinite impulse response filtering and 3D processing.

PowerTune technology enables designers to lower power consumption under any usage model, trading off between ultralow-power operation and SNR for better audio quality. Designers can tune their system to use as little as 2.4mW in stereo playback when performance is programmed to the 90dB SNR level; conversely, performance can be maximized to get 100dB SNR at 5.1mW in stereo playback.

Dual integrated LDOs give additional power supply rejection and expand device capability to operate single-supply up to 3.6V. Other features are stereo headphone amplifier, dual microphone programmable gain amplifiers, fractional PLL and analog input mux.

The TLV320AIC3254 is available in a 5mm x 5mm QFN-32 package and priced at $5.45 in 1000-piece quantities. The pin-compatible TLV320AIC3204, without the miniDSP functionality, is available for $3.45 in 1000-piece quantities.
