Rumors have been circulating that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd (TSMC) has been approached to buy all or part of Singaporean foundry rival Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Pte. Ltd.

According to a report from Reuters, TSMC, the world's top contract chipmaker, refused to comment on market speculation that Temasek Holdings had talked to TSMC to sell its stake in Chartered.

Temasek is a major shareholder in Chartered. In the report, TSMC declined to give a comment. The full details of the article can be read on Reuters' report.

Silicon foundries like Chartered, TSMC and United Microelectronics Corp., are undergoing a significant decline in their wafers that are likely to result in sub-75 percent capacity usage rates in Q4, according to Steven Pelayo, analyst, HSBC Global Technology Research, in Hong Kong.
