LED drivers promise simplified configurations

Advanced Analogic Technologies has released two 4-channel, charge pump-based LED drivers for bigger LCD screens in compact feature entry-level handsets and portable devices. The AAT3104 and AAT3195 are in 2mm x 2.1mm packages, and give 16-step, 32-step or PWM current control in the small footprint. According to the use of an efficient charge pump with 1x and 2x modes, the drivers decrease external component count by 25 percent over competing solutions.

The AAT3195 backs general sources for common cathode configurations, driving up to four LEDs with up to 30mA each. It automatically shifts between 1x and 2x mode to deliver efficiency, current matching and accuracy. It works well at 1MHz switching frequency and is given in three versions with different interfaces:

  • AAT3195-1 gives 30mA current across 32 steps employing the S2Cwire interface.

  • AAT3195-2 supports 20mA current across 32 steps and uses the S2Cwire interface.

  • The AT3195-3 has a PWM interface.

    In comparison, the AAT3104 has the same current sinks for command anode configurations. It enables driving up to four LEDs with up to 30mA each. The device also automatically switches between a 1x and 2x mode to maximize efficiency and optimize LED current accuracy and matching.

    Both drivers have automatic soft-start, low-current shutdown mode to reduce power and integrated thermal protection.

    Both options are qualified cross the -40C to +85C temperature range and are available in 2mm x 2.1mm, 10-lead SC70JW packages. The AAT3104 and AAT3195 are sold for $0.87 in 1,000 quantities.
