Employing Ethernet over PDH in hybrid nets

The future belongs to IP technology. But now, there are several plesiochronous digital hierarchy (PDH) network ports in the world. A key issue to operators and providers is realizing the transition or update of the network. Ethernet over PDH (EoPDH) can provide Ethernet services through PDH, and is a backup solution to realize the convergence of the networks.

Back-up solution
Most EoPDH devices are only limited to private networks and point-to-point applications. With the ITU-T G.7043 and G.8040 standards established, interoperability between the new generations of EoPDH devices is made possible.

In the wired field, the new generation of EoPDH can complement Ethernet over SONET (EoS). A combination of both can realize the Ethernet service on existing copper cable. Because the connection between wired networks, base stations and base station controllers is inevitable, generic framing procedure (GFP), virtual concatenation (VCAT) and link capacity adjustment scheme (LCAS) are the back-up solution of wired networks; the new-generation EoPDH devices can realize the interconnection between them.

In some regions without Ethernet access devices, EoPDH can provide Ethernet services as a temporary solution. Compared with other convergence technologies, GFP and VCAT have higher efficiency in latency and network usability than point-to-point protocol (PPP), multilink PPP (ML-PPP) and high-level data link control (HDLC).
