Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd Samsung is now in volume production of its 25Gbyte and 50Gbyte solid-state drives (SSDs) for performance-optimized server applications like video on demand, Web serving and on-line transaction processing.

Targeting the consumer market, the Samsung's single-level-cell (SLC) SSDs have about twice the random write performance of its standard 32Gbyte and 64Gbyte SLC SSDs.

The company's SSD enterprise employs 1.25W power in active mode and 0.3W in idle mode. They use less than 25 percent of the power of a 2.5-inch 15K serial attached small computer system interface (SAS) HDD, and give the lowest possible heat load on a data center air-conditioning system.

Available in a 2.5-inch interface, the drives process 100x the number of IOPS per watt as a typical 15K 2.5-inch SAS HDD and five times the number of IOPS per dollar as a 10K 2.5-inch SCSI HDD.

The SATA 3Gbit/s drives read data sequentially at 100MBps and write it at 80MBps. They are now available globally.
