Femtocell DSP preps for base station tasks

Texas Instruments Inc. has unveiled the TCI6484, its first DSP designed specifically for femtocell base stations. The new DSP supports all major 2G/3G and 4G solutions including GSM, CDMA, W-CDMA, TD-SCDMA, WiMAX and LTE. In addition to targeting femtocells, TI said that the TCI6484 is suitable for macro, micro and pico base stations.

The TCI6484 is based on C64x+ DSP, which is augmented by RSA and Viterbi coprocessors. The TCI6484 also features dual Turbo co-processors that provide up to 34Mbit/s of symbol-rate performance. The chip's memory system features 3Mbyte of on-chip memory and a 667MHz DD2 memory interface. It also incorporates a sGMII interface for Ethernet and a 64bit EMIF for analog/RF connectivity.

Design wins
Although the TCI6484 is TI's first femtocell-specific DSP, the company has been quietly racking up femtocell design wins. In fact, TI claims that its DSPs are in the majority of femtocells deployed today, and backs up this claim with an impressive list of wins at companies including Samsung, Airvana, Huawei, Lyrtech, ZTE and Airhop.

Although TI has kept its femtocell design wins quiet until now, its success is hardly a surprise. Femtocells use much of the same technology as base stations, and TI dominates the market for base station DSPs. It makes sense that femtocell vendors would want to leverage their existing base station software rather than start over with all-new designs.

TI's TCI6484 is based on C64x+ DSP, which is augmented by RSA and Viterbi coprocessors.
