Embedded devices from PNDs to POS terminals have evolved from simple standalone devices to become devices that communicate to provide end-users with a high value connected experience. The future for embedded devices is smart, connected and service-orientedthey will be service-aware and have the ability to reach into the Cloud to discover and access Web services. In fact, we at Microsoft are already seeing this evolution and expect 2009 to be the year of smart, connected service-oriented devices.

To that effect, Windows Embedded is committed to help its partners bring smart, connected, service-oriented devices to market faster and cost effectively by optimizing each step of the embedded device lifecycle. OEMs will be empowered with tools which will allow them to deliver the next generation of media experiences and rich Internet applications for devices, while maintaining a low total cost of ownership. Furthermore, they will be able to take interactivity to a new level by building exciting input capabilities through multitouch, gesture support and User Interface enhancements.

Be it consumer or enterprise devices, it is inevitable that smart, connected, service-oriented devices are the future of today.
