FlexRay technology provider TTTech Automotive has introduced a FlexRay-based platform for chassis electronics. The pilot project has been developed in cooperation with car maker Audi AG's technology subsidiary Audi Electronics Venture (AEV).

The project, dubbed Pegasus, aims at developing a comprehensive automotive system including the software running on it. The platform resulting from the joint project integrates several safety-relevant chassis applications on the basis of an Audi S4 Avant concept car.

The objective of the project was to demonstrate the benefits of the time-triggered FlexRay technology over conventional event-driven automotive E/E architectures such as the widely used CAN-based systems. The designer crew deployed essential vehicle dynamics applications in the concept car to illustrate the feasibility and technical differentiators of the time-triggered approach.

According to TTEch Automotive, one of the challenges was to interconnect different data bus systems within the car. Another requirement was to combine existing chassis electronics and software structures of the OEM and the FlexRay technology, which already had been tried out in other applications. For the TTTech Automotive, the project was a major step to implementing the time-triggered FlexRay technology.

The significance of the project for automotive OEMs is that it demonstrates a migration path from conventional CAN bus topologies toward future FlexRay deployments. According to the Tier one, the use of FlexRay-based hardware and software allows better integration of existing functionalities. In addition, the prototype provides a basis for designing new applications.
