Nokia Corp. came to the Mobile World Congress armed with a couple of stunning additions to its line-up of smart phones and its much anticipated Ovi Store concept to push the business forward in what CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo described as challenging conditions in which efficiency and global presence will be crucial.

Admitting that the mobile communications sector would certainly be impacted by the global downturn, Kallasvuo nevertheless stressed there are also opportunities out there, notably in the services sector.

"We intend to continue investing in new opportunities while finding the right balance between that and tough but necessary cutbacks," he said.

Last week the Finnish group announced another round of redundancies in both R&D and production. And last month it reported falling sales and predicted a significant decline in phone shipment for this year.

Kallasvuo also hinted that its large acquisitions and deals to beef up its position in services and strategic technologies is, at least for now, done, and the focus is on innovation.

Star of the new lineup is undoubtedly the E75 which boasts full desktop email functionality with a slide out QWERTY keyboard and simple three-step email setup that Nokia says will be the first device to ship with Nokia Messaging, a service that opens up the world's leading consumer email accounts including Yahoo, Gmail and Hotmail.

The phone will start shipping next month, but at Euros 375 ($474) unsubsidized, won't come cheap.

"This is the best e-mail device we have done, and 120 operators or retailers have already indicated they will be carrying it," said Kai Ostiamo, executive VP at Nokia in charge of devices.
