Hewlett-Packard Co. has introduced new storage virtualization products said to enable customers to get more from infrastructures by reducing the need to purchase additional storage capacity.

The productsStorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) 6400 and 8400, and the enhanced SAN Virtualization Services Platform 2.1enable customers to re-allocate resources and simplify storage management across both virtual and physical environments, according to HP.

According to Kyle Fitze, director of marketing for storage platforms, HP StorageWorks, HP surveyed potential customers about server virtualization plans in light of the economic downturn. Fitze was surprised to find out that 56 of respondents were still planning to do a consolidation projection. The results initially surprised HP, Fitze said, but the company realized that the cost benefits of virtualization make it a worthwhile venture even in difficult times.

The new StorageWorks arrays and SAN Virtualization Services Platform are part of a larger push of new hardware, software and services to allow organizations to change how they produce, distribute and consume technology resources, HP said.

HP said the EVA6400/8400 is a highly reliable, easy-to-use and cost-effective storage solution designed for enterprise customers. The system is optimized for performance as well as capacity, and automatically grows or shrinks as applications demand, the company said.

The new virtualization platform extends the benefits of virtualized storage to multivendor SAN environments, HP said, providing access and management of data across different storage platforms, reducing cost and improving efficiency.

The HP StorageWorks EVA6400 and EVA8400 are currently available with list prices starting at $24,240 and $61,456, respectively. The HP StorageWorks SVSP2.1 is currently available with a list price of $37,180, according to the company.
