The Vietnam government has approved four telecommunications providers to offer 3G mobile phone services to the country, according to a report by AFP.

The report identified Viettel, Vinaphone, MobiFone, and a venture between Hanoi Telecom and EVN Telecom as the providers qualified for licensing, as said by the ministry of Information and Communications (MIC).

The AFP article cited MIC's press release: Over the next three months, the operators should be able to fulfill requirements regarding network infrastructure and equipment so they could be ready for formal licensing.

Vietnam is now home to more than 70 million mobile subscribers, according to the report. Viettel and MobiFone serve 26 million subscribers each, while Vinaphone caters to 20 million subscribers.
