PowerLayer Microsystems (PLM) has partnered with Internet on-line streaming video service provider PPS.TV to provide a reference platform incorporating PLM3000, a new-generation SoC for connected HDTV/IP-STB with built-in PPS.TV's P2SP streaming solution.

Internet streaming, including purchased or rented videos, ad-supported professional content and user-generated videos, is experiencing tremendous growth. In China, the number of users watching Internet videos has exceeded 200 million by the end of 2008, according to China Internet Network Information Center. In addition, In-Stat predicted that 94 percent of U.S. households with broadband access will watch online video by 2012 and 39 percent of U.S. adults will have either purchased or rented an online video.

Due to its display quality and screen size, HDTV provides an ideal display medium for consumers' enjoyment of Internet streaming videos. Current solution on the market are mostly based on HTTP streaming or require P2P pre-downloading, which would either require very large server bandwidths with limited on-line viewers and sub-optimal streaming video quality, or the inconvenience of waiting long hours/days for download for the case of P2P.

PLM addresses these issues with PLM3000 SoC that features Internet video streaming with high video quality and PPS.TV's P2SP client software. Leveraging the PLM3000 platform, PPS.TV's P2SP technology combines the advantages of HTTP-based streaming and P2P pre-downloading to service a large viewer base with modest server bandwidth while satisfying QoS requirements. As a result, PLM3000 reference platform, combined with PPS.TV's leading P2SP technology, provides rich and engaging interactive experiences and services for HDTV/IP-STB and other digital media players.

Incorporating advanced audio and video technologies developed and patented by PLM, PLM3000 enables cost-effective solutions for consumer products such as Internet HDTV set; multimedia player and high-end STB. PLM3000 can receive, decode and playback not only HDTV broadcast signals, but also Internet multimedia contents. Viewers can enjoy better experiences in Internet-based interactive and extended content services (such as movie, music, karaoke, games, news, etc.) via user-friendly GUI. All functions are driven by the integration of dual TS-DeMux, digital multi-format AV decoders, multi-mode segment video enhancement engine, dual 400MHz MIPS CPUs, powerful application software with Unified Content Client Interface for third party contents and rich peripheral interfaces.

"Today, TVs and STBs are playing an important role in enabling digital entertainment at home. Since more and more homes have broadband Internet connection, there is a need to develop Internet streaming-capable TVs and STBs." said Xu Dong, CEO of PLM. "Our collaboration with PPS.TV represents the ongoing convergence of Web streaming on HDTV and STB that will allow consumers to enjoy rich Internet streaming videos with high definition display, superior audio effects and user-friendly interactive GUI."

Vincent Xu, president of PPS.TV, said "PPS.TV has successfully proven the video streaming service on Internet PCs with its rich video contents and the largest user base in the world. Now, by our successful porting of PPS.TV's advanced technology to PLM3000's powerful HDTV and IP-STB platform, we are bridging the gap between TV and Web service and are bringing the exciting entertainment experiences to living-room audience around the world."
