Worldwide semiconductor revenue totaled $255 billion in 2008, down 5.4 percent, or a $14.5 billion decline from 2007 revenue, according to the final market share analysis by Gartner Inc. The steep decline in the market in Q4 08, combined with the ongoing economic weakness, signals far worse declines in 2009.

STMicroelectronics was one of only three companies in Gartner's latest top ten ranking of semiconductor vendors for 2008 that was able to increase its sales over those of 2007.

Qualcomm was able to increase semiconductor sales by 15 percent to $6.5 billion and as result leaped from 11th place to 8th. NEC nudged up 3.2 percent to achieve $5.77 billion sales in position 10 and ST increased sales by 3.1 percent to register $10.27 billion and move from 6th place in 2007 to 5th place in 2008, swapping places with Infineon Technologies AG (including sales of Qimonda).

The companies that suffered most were those exposed to memory sales. Samsung retained second position, but with sales down 15 percent at $17.39 billion the company's sales now stand at half those of market leader Intel, which contracted only 0.5 percent to $33.81 billion.

"While sales held up fairly well in the first half of 2008, in the third quarter the industry started to soften as the economy slowed, and by the fourth quarter sales were deteriorating quickly, causing revenue growth to go into negative territory," said Peter Middleton, principal research analyst at Gartner. "With the market heavily impacted by the recession, we can expect considerable market consolidation going forward," he added.
