32bit flash MCUs pack peripheral, comm functions

SH7216 32bit MCUs

Renesas Technology America Inc. has launched the SH7216 group of 32bit on-chip flash memory microcontrollers, the newest addition to the 32bit SuperH RISC family.

The MCUs feature 200MHz operation and an extensive set of built-in peripheral and communication functions for industrial applications such as AC servos, factory automation equipment, building automation and various types of communication apparatus. The SH7216 group consists of 36 devices in 12 product groups that differ in on-chip memory capacity, package type, and whether or not floating point processing unit (FPU) and/or Ethernet functions are included.

The products employ a 32bit SH-2A superscalar core and 100MHz flash memory technology. Select devices also include 400 MFLOPS single and double precision floating point unit. In addition, the SH7216 group implements advanced prefetch and cache techniques to deliver up to 400 DMIPS of performance while executing from flash, and 480DMIPS while executing from RAM. These products also include 15 dedicated register banks to shorten the interrupt latency to just 6 cycles.

The SH7216 group provides a level of performance and precision to motor control and other factory automation applications that was traditionally achieved by using ASIC or a dedicated /DSP coprocessor.

Tailored for industrial apps
In addition to the typical serial communication functions, these MCUs also feature a diverse set of interfaces, including Ethernet, CAN, and USB 2.0, full speed. These features eliminate the need for external communication controllers in applications such as office automation equipment, and various types of communication apparatus.

These microcontrollers provide two advanced motor control timer units (MTU2 and MTU2S) that can control two motors simultaneously and enable multi-axis servo control with high precision. They also provide 12bit ADCs that can perform conversions in 1?s to improve precision and accuracy in motor control and other applications. Furthermore, the MCUs provide an extensive set of other peripheral functions, including data flash for non-volatile data storage and data transfer controller and DMAC to reduce the CPU load. This data flash memory incorporates background operation (BGO) functionality that enables data to be written at the same time a program is executing and allows data writes without slower program execution, making it ideal for backup and other similar applications.

In addition, the SH7216 group can operate from a single 3.3V digital system power supply, which allows the external power supply system to be simplified, and assure adequate dynamic range by adopting a 5V analog system power supply.

The SH7216 group adopts the SH2A-FPU, which adds an FPU function to the SH-2A, as the CPU core, and can perform double precision floating point operations at speeds up to ten times faster than previous products. The new group also provides up to 1Mbyte of high-speed flash memory to store the increasingly large programs associated with the higher functionality required in the latest equipment. The SH7216 also provides up to 128Kbyte of on-chip RAM so that the previously required external SRAM or SDRAM is no longer needed. This can contribute to miniaturization and lower costs in application systems.

While Renesas provides a product line of high-speed communication interfaces, such as Ethernet and USB, as products for use in ASSP devices, in the SH7216, these interfaces are integrated on the same chip. The microcontrollers also include a CAN controller to enable a wide range of industrial communication protocols. The Ethernet interface includes a MAC that conforms to the IEEE 802.3 standard and can connect to a 10- or 100Mbit/s Ethernet.

The devices are available in 176-pin LQFP (24mm x 24mm), 176-pin LQFP (20mm x 20mm), and 176-pin BGA (13mm x 13mm) packages. Pricing for the SH7216 group is $12.31, each in 10K quantities.
