UCD9220 power controller

Texas Instruments Inc. has expanded its Fusion Digital Power controllers with a new dual-output, multiphase synchronous buck controller that can support various point-of-load configurations.

The UCD9220 device provides 250 picoseconds of pulse-width-modulation (PWM), a 2MHz switching frequency and high DC conversion ratios, while maintaining stable operation. The flexible controller meets complex power design requirements in telecommunications, server, data storage and industrial test and measurement applications. Designers can use the Digital Power Designer, a full-featured GUI, to configure the device easily and speed time-to-market.

The device features flexible digital power control that enables full loop compensation, including on-linear control for enhanced transient performance and system reliability. The controller includes phase current balancing that ensures uniform power dissipation. The UCD9220 also provides configurable switching frequency of up to 2MHz and allows use of smaller passive components to save board space. In addition, the controller has optimized power management features that enhance performance, such as PMBus-configurable voltage setting, sequencing, power-up and power-down timing and fault response.

The UCD9220 is available in a QFN-48 package and is priced at $2.65 in quantities of 1,000. The UCD9220 evaluation module will be available in late Q2 09.
