Report: Another China GPS satellite takes off

China's space administration has announced the launch of its navigational satellite, the second in a series of up to 30 orbiters to comprise a GPS network, according to an AFP report.

The satellite launch of COMPASS took place from the Xichang Satellite Launching Center in southwest Sichuan province, the report further noted. According to Xinhua news agency, COMPASS is one of up to 30 that China will put in orbit by 2015 to form its own Beidou Navigation System.

The system will provide services for transportation, meteorology, petroleum prospecting, disaster forecasting, telecommunications and public security.
